Project Ideas for Tin Tile

Tin tiles were popular in the later 1800s, and the early part of the 1900s. The tiles were an affordable way to achieve the same decorative effect of a much more costly to install plaster ceiling.

Interestingly, the tiles also provided a measure of safety from fire. The ceiling tiles slowed the spread of flames from downstairs to upstairs rooms, giving occupants a little more time to escape.

Our stock of Antique tin tiles has been locally sourced; salvaged from buildings in and around Winnipeg.

Tin tile can be used for more than just ceilings. Our very creative Old House customers have repurposed tin tiles for all kinds of interesting applications --- as headboards, backsplashes, and fireplace inserts.

Salvaged tin tiles often have a beautiful patina that makes them fantastic as decor items. Build a frame around a tile, hang it as art...or keep things simple and just nail or screw the tiles to the wall as is.

Recently staff at the Old House made over an old metal lantern-style fixture with some tin tiles that had oxidized and rusted so much that they had holes in them!

The lantern top reminded us of a witch hat. The tiles were spookily corroded...it was a perfect and timely pairing --w ith a candle lit inside the lattern cast dark and unearthly shadows on our Halloween sale.

This project was quick and simple. We made templates from one of the lantern's original panels. The tile was easy to cut to size with tin snips. We picked sections of tile that were particularly corroded and some that had existing holes and punctures in them.

Embroidery fun!

The Old House hosted a free embroidery class on July 23, 2008. Its amazing how quickly

students learned a few basic stitches. The class participants each finished a really cute sampler design with iron on transfers and instruction courtesy of our Antique Mall vendor Urban Nostalgia.

We definately hope to hold more classes like this in the future. If you are interested please contact us.

A lovely selection of these adorable transfer patterns from Sublime Stitching are available here in the Antique Mall...along with accessories like embroidery scissors and t-shirt stabilizer. We also have a variety of vintage pattern books for all your retro crafting needs.

For those of you too busy to try embroidering your own linens... our vendors have a lovely selection of "ready made"vintage pieces in beautiful condition.

Project Demo: Turn over these ideas!

We are excited and looking forward to our very first Wednesday evening with extended store hours.

For the month of July the Old House will be open late on Wednesday evenings until 7pm.

We have a series of fun activities planned for each evening we'll be open.

First up, on July 2 & 9, 2008:

What to do with all those sad little door knobs that can no longer function as door knobs but are just to nice to throw away and....

What about all those impossibly beautiful door knobs that we just don't have enough doors for?

With just a little bit of time and some easy to find materials those door knobs can be recycled for new purposes --- they make great hooks for coats or can be used as tie backs for curtains.

We also enjoy seeing them hung on the wall as art.

We'll show you how...step by step and we'll have project samples on display.

Wednesday July 2 and 9

Open - 11:30 until 7pm.

We could not resist the opportunity to acquire a large collection of crocks, mostly Medalta, in varying sizes from little to big 10 quart vats! The possibilities are endless: store some kitchen or garden utensils, use as an umbrella stand, store your magazines, plant a plant, the skies the limit! Come see our display... you can't miss it when you walk in the door!

Treat your Father to a walk down Memory Lane!

I can't believe it's nearly is June 15th. Father's Day is is around the corner! Here is an idea for a special way to spend the day with Dad. Take him for a walk through the Old House Revival Company and stir up some good memories of his past. See what stories of his childhood are evoked when you visit the store. Or inspire him to projects future!

Old yet new!

As much as we here at the Old House love the beauty of patina only created by years of use and weather on our old house parts, there is something really special and exciting about finding new/old stock.

Something about the idea of retro hardware neatly tucked inside its original box --- or snuggled in a sealed envelope --- whiling away the years in some dark corner or over-full garage is really appealing.

Recently unearthed --- These fantastic bathroom sconces in deco styling. they've never been installed and are in perfect condition. They even have a date stamp on the back -- NOV 17, 1954.

We have them here for you ready and waiting to fulfill their lighting destiny...finally...after 50 years!

We have THREE pairs... get them before they're gone.

Happy 75th Birthday, Dick!

Today is Dick Turnbull's 75th Birthday! His wife, Margaret organized a surprise Birthday party for him last night. Margaret did a great job of sneakily bringing family and friends together. And the best part of all -- the surprise party was indeed a complete surprise! Dick had no idea what excitement the evening would hold when he left work for “early dinner reservations with his family”. Many special guests travelled from out of town to celebrate with Dick.
We are very happy to have this stained glass expert in-house — come say hello, see his work and wish him Happy Birthday when he's in the store - Tuesdays to Saturdays! Happy Birthday, Dick!

Beginnings

. . .

The current Old House building was the old Peter's Auction located across Young Street from the CBC building in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There were a few small holes in the ceiling that needed attention. The old roof was removed and new one built. The old brick facade was restored by sand blasting. The interior had to be dried, emptied and gutted. The sandblasting crew returned to do the interior. All walls, both brick and wood as well as the ceilings and beams were blasted. The floors were levelled and sealed, new windows installed. Foam insulation was added and some walls were framed. The woodwork and floors were sealed and the installation of shelving began. Old doors, sandblasted, were fitted to form wall panels and wainscotting.

The finished product is awash with ideas on how to use antique building materials in new and creative ways. However, to see them best you will have to come and visit us at The Old House Revival Company, 324 Young Street.
